Thatcham - announce winners of the ninth British Insurance Vehicle Security Awards (BIVSA)

Vehicle manufacturers were celebrating nearly a decade of achievement in vehicle security, as the winners of the ninth British Insurance Vehicle Security Awards (BIVSA) were announced at Thatcham today.

In the presence of Jeremy Browne, Minister of State for Crime Prevention, Volkswagen UK were presented with the overall best car manufacturer award for the 3rd year running with the Beetle, Phaeton and Sharan amongst its category winners, whilst Nissan scooped the LCV equivalent with the Nissan Primastar winning outright in the Heavy Van category.

Since its launch in 2004, BIVSA has come to be recognised as the pinnacle for vehicle manufacturers in terms of recognition of their work in making vehicles more secure and reducing vehicle crime.

Supported by the UK Government, The Department for Transport and other key stakeholders, the awards represent an opportunity for manufacturers to demonstrate to their customers the efforts they are making in minimising the disruption and anxiety caused by becoming a victim of crime.

In the nine years of the BIVSA awards Thatcham have presented over 150 awards to nearly 20 different manufacturers and thanks to their efforts, alongside law enforcement, government and the insurance industry, vehicle crime has fallen by approximately one third in that period.

Meanwhile, according to Thatcham's vehicle security team, the best continue to get better.

"We work closely with the police to establish the current techniques that thieves are using and the British insurance industry's vehicle security criteria against which vehicles are assessed is continually updated to reflect this knowledge. 
In this way we have continued to raise the bar for manufacturers and they in turn have responded with ever more secure vehicles," said Peter Shaw, Chief Executive at Thatcham.

Additional security features that manufacturers have introduced over the period covered by BIVSA include the standardisation of double locking, improvements to vehicle identification and anti-counterfeiting measures, drive-away locking, lockable fuel filler caps, the use of laminated glazing on high end models, improvements to alarm systems and immobilisers and the introduction of keyless entry and keyless start vehicles.

However amongst the celebrations, Thatcham concede that the fight against vehicle crime is not yet won and recent security issues serve as a reminder that whilst these awards in their current format are coming to an end the fight against the thieves is not.

"In late 2011 we identified a new theft trend involving criminals using sophisticated technology to access a vehicle's On Board Diagnostics port and extract the information required to programme a new key. 
This new issue demonstrates that despite the achievements of manufacturers, whilst thieves continue to look for new ways to steal vehicles there will be no room for complacency in the fight against vehicle crime." added Shaw.

Speaking at the event on behalf of vehicle manufacturers, Paul Everitt, Chief Executive of the SMMT, said 
"These awards demonstrate the commitment vehicle manufacturers have to ensuring customers' cars and vans remain protected. 
The industry strives to stay one step ahead of criminals and only by working closely with the Police, insurers and the experts at Thatcham, can we maintain the downward trend in vehicle related crime. 
The unregulated purchase and use of equipment that should only be available to specialist technicians is an increasing concern and we should collectively explore how we can minimise its impact on the safety and security of the motoring public."

Whilst this will be the last Security Awards in its current format, going forward Thatcham and their insurer stakeholders announced their intention to extend the coverage of these awards to recognise achievements in safety as well as security and as such, in 2013 the awards will become the British Insurance Vehicle Safety and Security Awards (BIVSSA).
